Stem cells act as our bodies’ repairmen; however, as we age or get injured, we sometimes cannot get enough of these critical repair cells to the injured area. Regenexx stem cell procedures increase the availability of these cells and enhance the body’s natural ability to heal.

Depending on a patient’s injury and specific needs, the doctor will recommend which stem cell procedure will provide the best results. Some indications benefit greatly from a same-day procedure (which is available in our California offices), while others are best treated with cultured stem cells (Regenexx-C). Regenexx Cayman also offers a tailored treatment for injured spine discs (Regenexx-C Disc). Cultured stem cells often expand substantially and additional cells can be cryopreserved and saved for future treatments.

About the procedure

Regenexx-C is a two part, cultured stem cell procedure. During part 1 of the Regenexx-C procedure a patient’s own bone marrow stem cells are extracted and harvested. Using a proprietary lab technique, our cell biologists then grow these cells in our state-of-the-art facility.

Typically, a patient’s cells grow to 100-1,000 times more than what was initially harvested, and if there are extra stem cells, they can be preserved for future use. The re-injection cycle normally takes place 4 – 6 weeks after your bone marrow aspiration (BMA). During this time, your cells are grown for approximately 10 days and then tested for quality assurance, including sterility testing and karyotype analysis to ensure there are no genetic abnormalities present in your stem cells. Once your cells have passed all safety and quality testing, you will be contacted with your results and invited to schedule the re-injection cycle.

During part 2 of the procedure, the cultured cells are thoroughly tested for quality assurance and re-injected, using guided imaging, to ensure the most precise placement of cells into the injured area.

    This data was derived from a group of patients with mostly severe thumb arthritis who were injected with their own stem cells. Most of these patients would have been candidates for thumb joint replacement or a surgery where a tendon is coiled up in the joint at the base of the thumb. Both are big surgeries with significant complications.

    This data analysis is part of the 2015 download of patient results tracked in our advanced treatment registry. The data shown here is predominantly for ankle patients that have on average moderate to severe arthritis with some also having instability in the ligaments and/or tendinitis/tendon tears. A few small foot joint patients are also included in this data set.

    This data compares two groups of patients who received epidural steroids vs. PL-Disc and looks at their results at 3 month and 6 month intervals using a Functional Rating Index (FRI), which measures things like pain as well as the ability to walk, sit, lift, bend, etc.
