Bone Density Testing
Bone mineral density (BMD) testing is a relatively quick and easy test that can be performed to evaluate for osteopenia or osteoporosis.
In the world of sports medicine, it is also used to evaluate for abnormal bone density in athletes who have developed one or more stress fractures. These may occur commonly in runners, gymnasts, dancers, skaters and other athletes who may be particularly prone to the Female Athlete Triad (decreased bone mineral density, amenorrhea and disordered eating).
BMD testing may also be considered in men who have sufferred multiple stress fractures or have other risk factors.
